Yardarm Lager

A review of Yardarm Lager - a thoroughly satisfying beer, a little bit hoppier than most mainstream lagers, but not too much.

4/5
Long gone are the days when alcohol-free beer was packaged like it didn’t matter. This Scottish lager is one of a new generation of low-ABV beers that are competing for consumers’ attention with eye-catching bottles and cans – in this case with a smart nautical flag design.
Like quite a few of the drinks we’ve reviewed, this is a beer with a good backstory. Sonja Mitchell is a beer-lover who doesn’t love hangovers. So, she ‘jumped ship’ from her busy job and got to work brewing alcohol-free beer.
The results are impressive. This is a thoroughly satisfying beer. It’s a lager, a little bit hoppier than most mainstream lagers, but not too much. It’s got a lovely golden colour and a nice citrus aroma. And it’s got body – something that’s hard to achieve at 0.5%.
It’s also got some green credentials: it comes in light, recyclable cans, and the grain that’s left over from brewing goes to a farmer to feed his cattle.
